Wang’s last outing wasn’t very good, so everyone was looking for him to improve today. The good news is that he did.
Wang 3.2 2 0 0 2 1 0
The first inning, his fastball wasn’t really sinking like it should but he still got his outs. It was generally hitting 93-95MPH which is good because it means he wasn’t overthrowing, which is what killed him during the playoffs. He also mixed in his slider and change, both of which he needs to get more comfortable with. Wang left his slider up too high a few times, something he won’t be able to get away with in the regular season.
Nothing really got into the air off his pitches, which is great because when that happens it means Bad Things. When they pulled him out after letting a baserunner on in the fourth inning, Dave Eiland seemed to be pleased with what he saw.
Ramirez 0.1 0 0 0 0 0 0
Edwar Ramirez came into to get the last batter in the fourth out, and did popping him up. His fastball placement was a bit off, which makes it harder to set up his great change.
Farnsworth 1.0 1 0 0 1 0 0
Farnsworth’s control didn’t look bad for the most part, but he still had to work too much. He’s still getting ahead of batters then finding himself unable to get them out quickly.
Rasner 2.1 2 1 1 1 2 0
Rasner’s outing was solid, nothing special but that’s what you get from Rasner. He got taken out after allowing a hit in his third inning. Look for him to get a spot start or two if Kennedy, Hughes and Joba get in trouble with their inning ceilings.
Bruney 1.2 1 0 0 0 2 0
Bruney is a guy with very hard stuff, but command problems which cancel that out a lot of the time. Today, he looked pretty good although he did still have some problems but did an okay job of buckling down. His fastball was a few miles below where it is when it is insanely out of control, which probably helped him. He looks like he is getting out of the “throw as hard as you can” mindset.
Russ Ohlendorf was supposed to pitch today but because they gave Rasner three innings and had Bruney pitch 5 outs he didn’t get in the game. Hopefully he’ll make an appearance soon.
