Pitching Matchups – Twins vs Yankees

Probable pitchers are now set for the Yankees/Twins series that starts tonight and boy are they exciting!

Monday, July 21st
Nick Blackburn (7-5, 3.65ERA, 1.28WHIP) vs Sidney Ponson (1-0, 4.24ERA, 1.65WHIP with the Yankees).

Sidney Ponson has a walk problem, and a hit problem and is basically a problem. Nick Blackburn is pretty good. The Yankees have hope only if Ponson eats Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau before gametime. Outlook: Yankees win streak ends at 3.

Tuesday, July 22nd
Kevin Slowley (6-6, 4.26ERA, 1.13WHIP) vs Darrell Rasner (5-7, 4.97ERA, 1.51WHIP)

Two pitchers who aren’t very good! The Yankees have issues hitting pitchers who fall into this category, whereas the Twins do not as far as I can tell. Rasner doesn’t walk that many guys but that’s not an issue with the twins. Outlook: Battle of the bullpen.

Wednesday, July 23rd
Glen Perkins (7-2, 3.84ERA, 1.42WHIP) vs Mike Mussina (12-6, 3.49ERA, 1.24WHIP)

Perkins has been solid for the Twins, but tends to give up homeruns and walks a few too many. He is, however, left-handed which means the Yankees will find him utterly baffling. Mussina has sold his soul (or something else, maybe he sold his soul for 2006 I don’t know) to get back to a place where he’s pitching solidly. Relying heavily on groundballs, this could be an issue with the Twins who stock their team with speedy guys who ground out a lot. Outlook: Toss-up, but Moose is due for a bad outing so I’m leaning towards the Twins.
