The Rays just signed Pat Burrell to a 2 year/16 million dollar deal. That is insanely cheap, and he will presumably be their DH since Crawford is a Tampa institution in Left Field and they acquired Matt Joyce to play Right Field. The lineups for the top three teams in the AL East now look something like this:
| Yankees | Red Sox | Rays |
|---|---|---|
| Damon | Ellsbury | Iwamura |
| Jeter | Pedroia | Upton |
| Teixeira | Ortiz | Longoria |
| Rodriguez | Youkilis | Pena |
| Matsui | Bay | Burrell |
| Posada | Drew | Crawford |
| Cano | Lowell | Navarro |
| Swisher | Lowrie | Joyce |
| CF TBD | Catcher TBD | Bartlett |
Those are three ridiculous lineups. Then, the pitching looks something like this:
| Yankees | Red Sox | Rays |
|---|---|---|
| Sabathia | Beckett | Kazmir |
| Burnett | Matsuzaka | Shields |
| Wang | Lester | Garza |
| Chamberlain | Penny | Sonnanstine |
| TBD | Wakefield | Price |
Yikes. It’s really going to be a dog fight in 2009.
