On Friday, Chris and I headed all the way down to Coney Island from Washington Heights to check out Keyspan Park for the first time and watch the Staten Island Yankees take on the Cyclones. We had a very long trip on the train that took longer than it should have because of some annoying MTA antics, but enjoyed ourselves there.
As a lifelong Coney Island hater (it takes too long to get there from the Heights to make the trip worth it in any way normally) I was sort of expecting not to have any fun, but the park was very cute and minor league baseball always makes me happy apparently.
The game itself was no great shakes–Arodys Vizcaino started for Staten Island. He’s an 18 year old international signing with a lot of promise. I wasn’t really in a good position to really check him out as we had standing room tickets and roaming around, but other than a meltdown with two outs in the third he looked pretty good. NY-Penn League numbers should not really be taken to mean anything, but he struck out 7 in 4.1 innings so good for him. He’s worth keeping an eye on.
Also, Carmen Angelini did not make any errors so that was pretty exciting.
Without further ado, here are my pictures:
- The view from Left Field SRO on an overcast night in New York.
- Not sure how the Cyclones picked which Dodgers numbers to retire, but here you go.
- The view from LF SRO, the clouds let up a little bit at one point.
- The visitor’s bullpen is at the end of Left Field.
- Fun (or something) being had in the visitor’s bullpen.
- The view from SRO behind HP.
- Here are the retired numbers of Cyclones. Brian Bannister and I have no clue!
- Still cloudy as the sun starts to go down. Makes for pretty lighting.
- The clever and cute scoreboard at Keyspan Park.
- I saw Carmen Angelini get a hit–here he is on second base.
- Carmen Angelini on 3rd base, advanced on a groundout.
- Night time view, SRO between home plate and third base.

- Looking over at the Amusement Park, doesn’t quite capture the view.
